<subfield code="a">"How sexist are the Big Five' religions of the world? Which ones have been the most biased against women and in what ways? How have gender prejudiced traditions been justified by conservative defenders and criticised by reform feminists? The proposed title aims to answer these questions and disclose the complex web of sexual inequality across the major world religion by analysing the most common gender-biased teachings and practices in Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Following a thematic and comparative approach, this unique introductory textbook is organised around seven themes (gender of divinity, the meaning of womanhood, the binding attitude of the male founder to women, the status of the wife within marriage, the duties of the mother, the threat of sexual temptation to devout men, and the access to religious leadership) and explores to what extent each theme is relevant to, and how it manifests in, each of the five religions. Each chapter also presents the arguments used by conservative defenders and feminist critics on each of the themes, hence bringing together the lived experience of religions (which is entwined with social practice) with critical theory and the story of feminism thought. This innovative perspective makes the proposed text a ground-breaking cross-sectional study that guides students understand similarities and differences of the Big Five' with regard to one of the most discussed issues in our society. There is, at the moment, no direct competition in the form of a thematic and comparative study of gender inequality across these five religions. Hence, the proposed book not only fills a real gap in the academic literature, but also represents a significant opportunity for the interdisciplinary development of the SSH programme, bridging the gap between religious studies and social sciences programmes like gender and sexuality studies, feminist studies, religion and society as well as cultural studies, anthropology, and history."--</subfield>
