She calls herself Atusparia, after the nineteenth-century Peruvian indigenous leader who spearheaded the resistance, and after the delirious communist school where she studied in the dying days of the Cold War.
Love in the age of capitalism drags her into a spiral of drugs and frenetic sexuality that pulls her away from the ideals of her youth, until the call of her roots leads her on an initiatory journey to the shores of Lake Titicaca, where she merges with the revolutionary hero of her childhood.
There are no clear precedents for this new novel by Gabriela Wiener. Atusparia is radical and exquisite; satirical, autofictional, and slightly futuristic. Straddling social realism and poetic fantasy, Wiener makes a masterful leap in her writing and offers us her post-indigenist “great Russian novel”: a story in which hierarchies and struggles for power ultimately tear apart the very movements of emancipation.
