The case is assigned to Melchor Marín, a young police officer and voracious reader who arrived from Barcelona four years earlier. Burdened with a dark past that has turned him into a legend within the force, he believes he has buried it beneath his happy life as the husband of the town librarian and the father of a little girl named Cosette—just like Jean Valjean’s daughter in his favorite novel, Les Misérables.
