He now works as a librarian and lives with his daughter, Cosette, who has become a teenager. One day, Cosette discovers that her father has hidden the truth about how her mother died—a revelation that confuses and enrages her. Shortly afterward, she leaves for a vacation in Mallorca but never returns; she doesn’t answer Melchor’s calls or messages. Convinced that something terrible has happened, he sets out for the island to find her.

From there, the novel plunges into a gripping labyrinth—both dark and full of light—where Melchor discovers that human beings are capable of the worst, but also of the very best: that we live surrounded by violence, lies, abuses of power, and cowardice, yet there are still people willing to risk everything for a just cause.
