520			_aEn las montañas de la locura es la memoria en primera persona de un geólogo de la Universidad de Miskatonic sobre una reciente expedición dirigida por él al continente antártico y su trágico final. Narra el profesor superviviente cómo se inició la expedición, con aeroplanos y trineos tirados por perros, y cómo en uno de los vuelos de reconocimiento se toparon con una impresionante cordillera, tal vez más elevada que el Himalaya. Un primer grupo llega por tierra a sus estribaciones y acampa al pie de los montes. Las exploraciones de la zona llevan al grupo a descubrir una cueva en cuyo interior encuentran catorce fósiles de una estatura superior a la humana pertenecientes a unos seres totalmente desconocidos para la ciencia: el cuerpo principal del organismo tiene forma de barril, sostenido por una serie de patas, de su extremo superior surge un ramillete de tentáculos y dispone de unas alas membranosas replegadas a ambos costados. Un segundo grupo, con el que viaja el narrador, pierde, tras estas intrigantes informaciones, el contacto por radio con el primero, y se dirigen al lugar en aeroplano. El espectáculo que les espera al llegar es dantesco... Poco después, en una inspección aérea sobre la cordillera, harán un descubrimiento histórico y fascinante... Muchos críticos han querido ver en este espeluznante relato una magistral continuación al misterioso final de Las aventuras de Arthur Gordon Pym, de E.A. Poe, precursor y maestro de Lovecraft.
520			_a"At the Mountains of Madness" is the first-person account of a geologist from Miskatonic University about a recent expedition he led to the Antarctic continent and its tragic end. The surviving professor narrates how the expedition began, with airplanes and dog sleds, and how during one of the reconnaissance flights they came across an impressive mountain range, perhaps taller than the Himalayas. A first group reaches its foothills by land and camps at the foot of the mountains. Explorations of the area lead the group to discover a cave containing fourteen fossils of a stature larger than human, belonging to beings entirely unknown to science: the main body of the organism is barrel-shaped, supported by a series of legs, from its upper end emerges a bunch of tentacles, and it has membranous wings folded on both sides. A second group, including the narrator, loses radio contact with the first after these intriguing findings, and they head to the location by airplane. The spectacle that awaits them upon arrival is harrowing... Shortly thereafter, during an aerial inspection of the mountain range, they make a historical and fascinating discovery... Many critics have seen in this chilling tale a masterful continuation of the mysterious ending of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym," a precursor and mentor to Lovecraft.
