Je suis né à Madrid, dans les années soixante. Franco était encore au pouvoir et, de temps en temps, son cortège passait devant ma fenêtre. Parfois, ma mère et moi nous descendions pour voir de plus près. Je n'oublierai jamais cette attente, le défilé des limousines sur l'avenue. Paradoxalement, nous habitions un quartier d'étrangers et d'artistes où régnaient une atmosphère authentiquement cosmopolite, une réelle décontraction. Un quartier qu'on appelait plaisamment Costa Fleming parce qu'on s'y sentait, disait-on, tous les jours en vacances. La vie, lorsqu'elle n'est pas corsetée par l'idéologie, nous réserve parfois des surprises. Je ne crois pas à la liberté absolue, qui ressemble trop à un rêve de toute-puissance, mais j'aime les parenthèses, les clairières du temps, quand les certitudes desserrent leur étreinte et laissent aux individus le loisir de respirer et d'inventer. J'évoque ici une période particulière de l'histoire de l'Espagne, les deux décennies comprises entre 1965 et 1985, qui sont aussi les années de mon enfance et de ma jeunesse. La dernière séquence du franquisme, la transition démocratique, la tentative de coup d'État, la Movida... En ce temps-là, les pays occidentaux semblaient encore très différents les uns des autres, et l'Espagne était l'un des plus singuliers. Depuis, une certaine uniformisation est à l'œuvre. Faut-il s'en réjouir, le regretter ? Il n'est pas interdit, en tout cas, de se souvenir. |

I was born in Madrid in the 1960s. Franco was still in power, and from time to time, his motorcade would pass by my window. Sometimes my mother and I would go down to see it up close. I will never forget that wait—the procession of limousines along the avenue.<br/><br/>Paradoxically, we lived in a neighborhood of foreigners and artists, where there was a genuinely cosmopolitan atmosphere, a real sense of ease. A neighborhood people jokingly called Costa Fleming, because, they said, it felt like being on vacation every day.<br/><br/>Life, when it isn’t constrained by ideology, sometimes surprises us. I don’t believe in absolute freedom—it too closely resembles a dream of omnipotence—but I do love those parentheses, those clearings in time, when certainties loosen their grip and people can breathe and invent.<br/><br/>Here, I recall a particular period in Spain’s history: the two decades between 1965 and 1985, which were also the years of my childhood and youth. The final phase of Francoism, the democratic transition, the attempted coup, La Movida… Back then, Western countries still seemed very different from one another, and Spain was one of the most distinctive. Since then, a certain uniformity has taken hold. Should we welcome it—or regret it? In any case, it is not forbidden to remember. |
