222 Bowery, sud-est de Manhattan. L’adresse a abrité, dit-on, l’atelier de Fernand Léger pendant la guerre. Mark Rothko y a peint des toiles décisives pour la suite de son oeuvre. Dans les années 1960, le poète John Giorno y a organisé des soirées extravagantes où la bohème se pressait autour de William Burroughs. Le mage de la Beat Generation, après des années d’errance, s’était en effet installé dans l’entresol sans fenêtres surnommé le Bunker.
Le 222 revit ici au gré des déambulations du passant du Bowery, narrateur énigmatique et fasciné qui, pièce par pièce, étage après étage, nous entraîne avec une nostalgie fougueuse dans la douceur enfiévrée des nuits et des jours de cet immeuble tout aussi méconnu que mythique.

222 Bowery, south-east Manhattan. The address is said to have housed Fernand Léger’s studio during the war. Mark Rothko painted canvases there that proved decisive for the rest of his work. In the 1960s, the poet John Giorno hosted extravagant gatherings where the bohemian crowd flocked around William Burroughs. The magician-like figure of the Beat Generation had, after years of wandering, settled in the windowless mezzanine known as the Bunker.

The building at 222 comes back to life here through the wanderings of the Bowery passer-by, an enigmatic and fascinated narrator who, room by room and floor by floor, leads us with fervent nostalgia into the feverish sweetness of the nights and days spent in this building, as little known as it is mythical.
